Tampa has more of a slow-paced small town, rural vibe. Miami has a big city feel heavily mixed with a Caribbean flavor. Tampa is absolutely BORING compared to Miami. But Miami is absolutely OVERPRICED compared to Tampa. The price of an old 2 bedroom condo in Miami can buy you a brand new 4 bedroom 2-story house in Tampa. It’s unbelievable how much better you can live in Tampa for half the price! But it all comes down to personal preference. I wanted to move to Tampa because my partying days are behind me but my wife doesn’t like the rural feel. But I would say that if you are more family-oriented and don’t party or go out a lot then move to Tampa. But if you are always looking for the next thrill then live in Miami.
Miami is a place that is always “awake” and upbeat. You will find no shortage of things to do and people to meet. I loved living here but would most likely want to visit instead of coming back to permanently settle down. Tampa might be my favorite place I’ve ever lived. It meshed very well with my personality. I’m a down to earth, code-savvy, female engineer who loves dabbling in outdoor activities. Tampa for me, poses the right mix of “downtown vibes” and suburban dwelling within 30 mins of each other.
So, now that you know what to expect from both cities, will your new home be in Tampa or Miami? Miami attracts young people due to its amazing energy and atmosphere. Tampa on the other hand is much more preferable for those who are family-oriented. However, they have many things in common being a waterfront tropical cities with a heavy Hispanic influence. If you are in the family phase of your life, then Tampa is a great option. If you are young and single or you are retired and the kids are all moved out, then live it up a bit and go to Miami.
