“ Kangaroo movers came recommended by my landlord. We had to relocate in the middle of summer under a tight deadline, and, being relatively new to the area, I accepted a word-of-mouth referral and booked our dates on the phone. First caveat: when the crew showed up, on time at the door, there were a few pages of legalese I had to sign, of which I had been given no prior notice, which I read cursorily. My bad, I supposed at the time. Second complication: Our move was in the middle of summer, which is physically strenuous work because of the climate in Southern Utah in this area (very, very hot). Kangaroo appears to work their crews hard. Slip-ups are bound to happen, alas, and they did for us. Apparently, the legalese I had signed included a waiver exonerating Kangaroo from any kind of liability for their negligence. (That means, "if I, Kangaroo, break your stuff because of most reasons, like, uh, I dropped it, well, it may be my fault, but you agreed it's your problem, not mine, sir!") This is the first time I hired movers with such a comprehensive not-my-problem-sir legally enforceable contract. The only redress under Utah law becomes available if the plaintiff can prove gross negligence, a much heavier burden of proof. It appears Kangaroo gets a lot of referrals from realtors, and, apparently, landlords. I am led to speculate there may be inducements (e.g. kickbacks of some kind) involved, indicating shrewd marketing. Combined with high-pressure sign it! tactics, and relatively little regard for human labor, I cannot recommend this business. Of course, your mileage may vary.”
