Every home needs maintenance, that’s just a fact of life and it most often depends on the season. It’s called spring cleaning for a reason but it isn’t always conditional on the spring season alone. Every season comes with certain needs for home maintenance and a comprehensive checklist of these needs will make undertaking them that much clearer.
Spring cleaning
In the first season of the year, home maintenance means caring for issues that have arisen during the winter season. Cold weather and snow really do some damage and require attention.
- Roof check – after winter, the roof would need some inspection as they have been doing quite a lot of work in siphoning rain or snow. Winds could have also affected tiles, by shifting or damaging them.
- Loft inspection – as a follow-up on checking the roof, inspecting the loft and the other side of the roof is vital. Look for any signs of water infiltration, check the insulation is still around 270 millimeters deep, and add more if needed.
- Spring cleaning – getting rid of some clutter accumulated is a good idea, especially in spring. After the Christmas season with decorations and nesting, some items may still need clearing away, or donating and this is an ideal time to do just that.
- Chimney inspection – once there is no more need for the fireplace and chimney in spring, make sure that it is still in good condition. Look for any signs of brick damage or soot deposits anywhere on the side, as it could indicate a crack.
Summer chilling
Hot summer months come with their own set of home maintenance issues that need tending.
- Air conditioning filters – summer brings about hot weather and as such your air conditioning will be again under use. Make sure to service it and replace filters where needed. If you need a new unit for the summer, check out ARS’ air conditioning installation services.
- Water filtering system – ideally some water filtering systems need maintenance every few months. Summer months are the ones most emphasizing hydration so ensure your filter is working as it should. Specific information on water filtration maintenance and more can be found on watermasterz.com.
- Central heating – yes it may sound odd to inspect the central heating system in the summer, but warmer months will mean more showers. So making sure that the central heating is in top condition for the season is important.
- Wash heavy bedding – summertime with hot dry air will be optimal to wash heavy bedding so that they can get dry quicker and get properly aired out.
- Trim and prune – outdoor plants in the garden may not be directly related to the home itself, but ones that are fairly close to the home and walls could damage said walls. Make sure to trim these plants, such as vines, especially climbing ones as they would latch onto the walls.
Autumn coziness
Falling leaves and colorful scenery are just the backdrops to autumn, but they also bring in some work for home maintenance.
- Service chimney – autumn is just the stepping stone to the colder months and if you have a fireplace you will start using it more. Provide the best possible use of your fireplace by servicing the cleaning of its chimney.
- Clean gutters – summer and spring may have not seen a lot of rain but autumn will surely do. Make sure there is a clear pathway for this rain to flow by cleaning out the gutter. This will also make it possible for winter snow melting to easily flow.
- Fire and smoke detectors – in keeping in line with the use of heating devices and tools in the home, make sure fire and smoke detectors work well too. Check the device, change batteries and even replace them if needed.
- Outdoor insulation – if you have an outdoor faucet or exhaust from the central heating condensation part, be sure to have them insulated. An uninsulated outdoor faucet can result in burst pipes in freezing weather, and the condensation pipe will damage your central heating unit.
Winter warming
The darker months are sometimes the most devoid of maintenance, but there are a few things to do around the home still.
- Condensation – this is something that needs to be done regularly. Windows gathering condensation can be a daily occurrence, and cleaning it away promptly will ensure less mold development and fewer issues with the windows as well.
- Air conditioning – no, there will not be a need to use the air conditioning, but the unit will need some maintenance. Cover it for the duration of the season so as to protect it against the cold and weather elements of winter.
- Basement inspection – any leakage in the basement could go unnoticed and result in ice forming. Thawing will thus cause water damage and even mold to develop, so keep an eye out for it.
