When it comes to packing the books that you want to keep and move to your new home, there are several important steps to take to do it the appropriate way. The truth is, improperly packed books are often the first reason for an accidental mess in the back of the moving truck. Plus it is the risk of damaging them that makes moving books a nightmare for book lovers.
Let us walk you through these tips on how to pack books when moving:
- Sort Books
Carefully go through your books and determine what you want to keep and what you don’t need any more in your home library. Remember if you’re moving long distance and have hired moving company, you will most probably be charged by weight, and pay more for all the heavy books you will need to move. Even paperbacks can add up to a lot of money. A good idea is to find a new home for some of them: by selling books online, give it to your friends and relatives, or put it up for a garage sale.
- Prepare the right materials
Choose strong cardboard boxes, that are small or medium sizes. Our advice is to buy new boxes for books or make sure, if it’s a used box, that it will hold the weight and that it is free of dampness. You’ll also need a lot of packing tape, which is the best thing to keep the boxes closed. Use it to seal the box bottom and top, and get a marker to label the box’s contents. Prepare rags, newspapers, stuff that can fill empty gaps in the box.
- Pack Books
Hardcover books can be packed by placing them in the box standing upright, spine against the box’s side, just like you were placing it on a shelf, but not too tightly to each other. Paperbacks as well as, hardcover editions, can also be packed flat and stacked. Both book types may be packed spine first with the paper edges facing up. To prevent damage, do not pack books with the paper edges facing down and spines up – this will cause books to warp and pages to bend. You can wrap each book in packing paper or bubble wrap before placing them in the box.
Finally, use rags, newspapers and other stuff to fill any remaining spaces.
Follow our tips for packing your books the best way, and remember that packed books are seriously heavy! Overfill a box of books, and you will soon find it impossible to lift. Do not stack the boxes in the moving truck unless you can properly secure them. Again, books are heavy, and if the boxes should topple, they can cause a lot of damage to furniture or other belongings that aren’t protected enough.
