The actual weight of the shipment was in line with the estimate which is very important in planning your moving budget. Watch out for companies who give you a lower weight estimate to try to earn your business. Debbie is wonderful! Her level of communication is beyond expectations! I was mainly looking just to have the heavy furniture moved, while I moved the smaller items (clothes, kitchen stuff, etc) myself. I contacted three companies for an estimate, per usual. I wasn't sure what to expect given COVID-19 issues, but most handled it either through a video chat or me providing a detailed description of what I had. I'm not sure if this was just because of the pandemic, or if that is how companies do it now...but I figured I'd add that detail. My husband and I had to constantly go find them in the truck, where they were chatting and hanging out. Not surprisingly, the move took several hours longer than expected, and we ended up having to pay then hundreds of dollars more than their estimate. Maybe it was just a bad crew, but the whole experience was miserable.”

We agreed on the price of $125 an hour for (3) men and one hour of commuting time for $125. Movers showed up on time at my apartment door and did a walk through. However, they returned to their truck and it was 20 minutes before they returned back to my apartment. My main complaint is that one of the workers whom took apart our (2) bed frames and re-installed the bed frames at our new location, used a "hand screwdriver" to take many, many screws and bolts apart. This took so much time meaning that only (2) workers were moving our furniture and property. Where was his "power tools" which would have made his job much faster and saved us money. Our last moving company used power tools to take apart furniture and re-assemble. We moved from a two bedroom apartment in Crystal City area of Arlington, VA., to Fairfax, VA and it took them (9) hours to complete!!! That's $1,100.00 folks?? We sold some big furniture items which they didn't have to move. The couch & dInette set. We were completely packed up when the movers arrived and not once did we hold them up. After packing the truck and leaving Crystal City, we were ready to immediately drive to Fairfax and unload our furniture and property. But no, the team leader said his guys were going to stop and get something to eat!!! They stopped at a McDonalds which cost us an additional 35 minutes. Sign me "A sad customer whom will not use Carmack services again and NOT recommend their services to anyone!!”

He called back and said that he had called a piano moving specialist to get a quote for me because he thought they might be able to do it for less than Carmack. He game me the phone number for the other company and a contact name. Thanks to Bruce we are saving at least $200 on the piano move. We appreciate Bruce, his honesty and excellent customer service. Set up an appointment with Mike on Carmack Moving & Storage on 7/6/17 at 4:00 for our interstate move. The appointment was confirmed by the office on 7/5 and Mike the morning of the 6th. 4:00 came and went. I called Mike & got voice mail so had to leave a message at 5:00 and 5:30. At 6:00 & 6:30 I texted him. He finally replied saying "Sorry, I can't communicate with you." As an HR manager, I know this is another way of saying he quit or was fired. No one from Carmack called to tell us he wouldn't be coming out, not the 6th. I let that slide knowing it's difficult to cover a sales persons appointments at the last minute expecting someone from Carmack would call the next morning with an apology and to reschedule. That call never materialized on the 7th or any other day. Yes, I could call them for an explanation and to reschedule, but figured if this how they treat you when they're trying to earn your business, I don't want to know how they treat you once they have your belongings to hold hostage.”

I do not think I could have hired a better company. I am so pleased on how they moved my 21,000 pounds. They picked up my fully furnished three level townhome on Saturday which took six hours, six guys and two 26 ft. trucks. They delivered on Sunday 60 miles away with six guys and it also took six hours to unpack. They were great, especially their team leader "Oscar". We had no damage. They showed up at both ends on time and at 8:00am. I would definitely use this company again. I did get five moving estimates and they were one of my lowest bids, Debbie did a great job quoting me something very competitive. I did go to their office, met the owner and support staff and they were all great. They also had a very well organize warehouse which I did not need and many trucks.”

Carmack called me out of the blue and asked if they could stop by and give me a free quote on my upcoming local move from Fairfax to Oakton...I already had a quote i was happy with but I took a chance on this company because I like to support local business. Turns out their quote was within $50 of the other one, BUT with Carmack I got an extra guy (4 total rather than 3) and I learned that whenever the movers get a good review, they get a pay bonus. The rep was also very good about explaining how moving insurance worked and didn't try to push it on me. So turns out I'm super clever because these guys were AMAZING. They were on time, polite - even friendly! They finished my move-out, transfer AND move-in in FIVE HOURS. Saved me $600+ from the estimate. Before you go with a big moving chain, definitely talk to these guys. I would go with them again in a heartbeat.”

So we chose Carmack because of price and honesty from the salesman. Everything went well with pack up and the guys were fantastic. Showed up on time and packed everything accordingly and with care. They gave us a free month of storage while our house was being built as well. So everything was great until the actual delivery. So our house was on time to be finished no issues. So we signed the contract for delivery no issues. Then hurricane Matthew hit Charleston where we were moving. Then it all went bad. House got delayed. Closing got pushed but not the movers. So they started out okay working with us. We were communicating just fine with the Operations Manager no issues. Then our closing got delayed another week. Tried to work out the timing with the OP Mgr but he said he couldn't because of two other customers that had been delayed but weren't affected by the hurricane. So we had to find a storage unit and have it unloaded and then find new movers to move it in. It was hassle. All we needed was an extra 4 days. And the OP Mgr told me since the other two customers weren't affected there was nothing he could do. Are you serious? There was a category 4 hurricane with flooding everywhere and power outages. Told us he had already delayed the other ones by two days and that were all they could do. So we asked for some assistance and got a list of storage places. We called around to ask other movers what they would have done and basically they would have arranged for the delivery and storage with another moving company taking on the financial burden to make it work for us. The bottom line that the OP Mgr told us was that they couldn't do anything and they were protected by the contract and the federal government in cases like this. So with all this said I would not recommend Carmack at all. I do believe they should have done better customer service and not hide behind a contract.”

However, as typical with most businesses (large and small), Sales and Operations do not always communicate so just confirm that what you discussed with the sales estimator is conveyed to the operations team. By general standards, overall the move went well in early March (we have moved 7 times in the 23 years using everyone from local 'mom and pop' operations to global corporate/government relocation services). We did have one item damaged and filed a claim for it. We were still waiting for a reply this month to our insurance claim but after finally juggled our schedules to review the damage it was a simple cabinetry repair which Carmack's Operations Manager personally took care of at our residence in an hour; no hassle with locating a repairman. Kudos to Carmack..”

All I can say is, WOW. We had a special situation requiring overnight storage and additional help, and the folks at Carmack went above and beyond to take care of our needs and give us a good deal. The movers were very polite and made sure to be careful with our things. They checked to make sure everything was packed up the way we wanted, and they even packed loose items we hadn't thought to pack, no extra charge! They triple checked that all our items went to the appropriate rooms. They also worked very fast! I don't know how they do it! Customer service from the main the office was very thorough in explaining everything, providing a detailed quote, checking in, and offering assistance every step of the way. Carmack is the moving company you want to root for - small, locally owned business with a really friendly staff. Plus, the people who move your goods are all full-time company employees. Unfortunately, my move with them was no where near as good as promised. My move: they were to pick up the goods, store it for a few months and send it to the other side of the country. I priced Carmack, Town & Country and J&K and wish I would have used one of the other firms. Communication with Carmack was TERRIBLE - no one would reply to me about when my items were delivered; when they failed to deliver within the promised window no one called to let me know they were not coming; no one ever told me how much the shipment weighed until after payment was due (against federal regulations), and they over charged me over $2000 (which I would not have known about unless I pressed for the weight and detailed information). SUMMARY: Carmack employees are very nice and the guys on the ground moving your items are good; but save yourself from their terrible communication and poor accounting/billing practices by using one of the region's other quality carriers.”

Ron, the operations manager, was a pleasure to work with. The office staff was very helpful and focused on our needs and the movers themselves were some of the hardest working people we've ever seen. They did all they could to complete the move as quickly as possible to limit the cost and they took great care of our things. They moved everything from our three-bedroom, single-family house without leaving a scratch on any of our things. We were also pleased with the overall cost. On 26 February 2020, I was moved by Carmack from Lorton VA to Woodbridge VA. The overall move was excellent and the Movers where very professional and duty oriented. However, during the move one of our tv's was damaged. The movers packaged and stowed the television on its side before placing it in the movers truck. Then when they unloaded the television they stowed it on its side in our master bedroom in Woodbridge. It is known that flat screen tv's especially at the size of ours (65") are required to be stowed/placed upright at all times to balance the weight of the tv and prevent damages. Our tv is now inoperable, cracked, and displays a black distorted images due to the negligent packaging/placement by the movers. Carmack Moving has not returned any of my emails or call referencing my claim. We went with Carmack Moving company particularly, due to the customer service of Ms. Debbie. This is really disappointing. It is already costly to move and then to incur a debt to replace an appliance unexpectedly due to negligence is completely unsatisfactory.”
