About Barnes Moving and Storage
In the 1930’s, Charlie Barnes owned a Sand & Gravel Delivery Business in the Stonington Area and occasionally helped his neighbors move. The demand was so great for moving furniture and household goods, that Charlie obtained his Connecticut State Hauling Authority License #CT 233, (one of the earliest licenses in the State). He located his Company on Route 27 in Mystic, Connecticut, 1/2 mile from the Mystic Seaport. In 1960, Robert & Frederick Barnes bought the business from their Uncle Charlie and in 1968 Jeffrey Barnes came to work for his father, Fred. In 1974, they moved to their present location on Route 184, the Goldstar Highway in Mystic, Connecticut and in 1980, they put in a Certified Truck Scale and joined National Van Lines Carol Barnes came to work for her husband, Bob in the late 1980’s and the four Barnes’s ran the business until Bob Barnes passed away in 1997. The Business was put up for sale in 1998 and Dean DePietro, then President and Owner of Presidential Van Lines in Providence, Rhode Island, saw the potential due to the location, and purchased the Company in February 1999. Since then, the Company has grown substantially. Barnes Moving & Storage joined Mayflower Transit in 2001 servicing all of Connecticut and Rhode Island. The company proudly serves America’s military by servicing the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, CT and The Newport Naval Station in Newport, RI.

These guys were awesome. The movers came the day of the move, introduced themselves one at a time and then got started. It was a fairly large move with some large furniture. These guys handled it no problem and were pleasant and friendly the entire time. I was told that taking apart exercise equipment was something they did not do, but after having problems disassembling one of the machines, the guys were nice enough to do it for me and then put it back together. I strongly recommend this company -- customer service is definitely their strong suit. I will be using them to do another move for a family member soon. Good Afternoon, I felt compelled to write this after my experience with Barnes Moving and Storage. Both Dean and Sharon have been extremely helpful in a process which started in the middle of March. First off they were both very professional when speaking and meeting with them. My mother was moving from one area to another in a local assisted living facility. Dean fit me in the first week I was there moving her. He arrived when he said he would and quickly went through her place asking all the right questions and understanding my concerns about the things that were going into storage etc. He explained everything thoroughly and within 48 hours had a quote sent to my email.....In the mean time I was able to have relatives and myself remove most of her belonging and by the time we had her moved upstairs there was nothing left to put in storage. I emailed Dean of the situation and he fully understood and was happy we had been able to take care of it all. Unfortunately My mother was only in the new unit for less than a month and I called Dean again saying sorry but I needed him to return as now I needed all of her remaining belongings shipped to my two children in different parts of the country. He was very sorry for our loss. He came out right away and on time to see what and where everything was going. Again he had the quote to me when promised. We agreed on a ship date the crew arrived on time and with great professionalism under the leadership of a gentleman named Coleman ( along with Jennifer and Greg) Packed up everything carefully and explained what and how the shipping would be handled. They were in and out in a timely fashion and I would highly recommend them to anyone who needs moving services of any kind in the future. The drivers not only stole some property but they did not complete the job they were hired to do. On closing day, they left over 1/3 of my property in the house. The buyers could have backed out of the deal for breach of contract. I had to hire two other people to complete the job just hours before I was supposed to be moved out of the house. I called to file a complaint. The manager, Dean, did nothing. I contacted the main office and was told they couldn’t do anything because it was a local move. They could only act if it were an interstate move. Do yourself a favor and find another company.”
