High Quality Work
When it comes to moving to a new home, opinions differ. For some people, packing up is real punishment but unpacking at the new house makes them feel energetic and full of opportunity. Many other people take part in packing up the household with pleasure, but they hate the drudgery of unpacking once the moving vans have parked near their new house.
If you’re one of those people who consider unpacking exhausting and stressful, here is the list of steps how to turn one of life’s great stresses into an enjoyable experience and make the work smooth, efficient, and fun.
The first step starts on the packing end of things. Give each room in the house its color and symbol — the kitchen is a green star, the bathroom is a white circle, the bedroom is a pink triangle, and so on. Mark each box and item with the appropriate room’s symbol. You can use fat colored markers and write directly on boxes.
When you get to your new home, put each symbol above the corresponding doors. The moving crew can quickly unpack the moving van and easily see where everything goes.
If you’re moving with kids, an idea of the floor plan is a great way to get them involved. The floor plan doesn’t have to be a work of art, just a basic sketch of each room and where the furniture goes. Let children decide where they want to put their furniture. You may wind up changing things later, but giving kids this bit of control on moving day can make a happy difference. Again, tape the floor plans outside each room so that the movers will know without having to ask where to locate the furniture in each room.
The last thing you need is to pack your entire life into garbage bags only to realize that the outfit you need for work the next day is buried somewhere at the bottom. Make sure to pack a small duffel bag with all of the essentials: toothbrush, any medications, pajamas, clean undies, essential documents you have, chargers, day-to-day toiletries, and maybe one or two outfits that will get you through the next few days of chaos. You should also include valuable items, like your passport, laptop, and car keys to staving them off from vanishing. Once your essentials bag is ready, you can proceed with packing.
Pack a basics box for each room in the house. Rather than put all the linens you own in a single box, fill a special box for each bedroom: sheets, pillows, comforters and, for those in need, bedtime toys. Bathrooms will need toilet paper, bath towels, and mats, a shower curtain, soap. Let the kids fill a box with the personal items that make their rooms feel like home: favorite toys, photos, books.
Pack a box of kitchen basics– a few pots and pans, dishes and utensils, the coffee pot, a trash can and liners, cleaning products and, if you use it a lot, your microwave. You may go out for a meal or order take-out food. A supply of natural treats like microwave popcorn, slice-and-bake cookies, pre-sliced carrot and celery sticks, and flavored fizzy waters will be welcome rewards during the hours of hard work.
