We spend an average of 26 years of our life in a dream. It is not surprising that when moving into a new apartment and transporting a bed and a mattress, you want to show maximum caution. Especially if you have invested a lot of money in this piece of furniture to get a good night’s sleep. Download the moving checklist here to save your time and effort. If you decide to do some part on your own, read moving tips about packing materials or watch useful videos on our channel.
Mattresses are difficult to transport, because they are large, uncomfortable and not as strong as you think. In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know to safely transport a mattress to a new home, regardless of where you are moving to. First, let’s look at how to act if you take up the case yourself.
If you are planning to move and are counting on your strength, here are six simple steps for successfully transporting a mattress.
Before moving, we always recommend reducing the number of things transported. Evaluate them with a critical eye and make sure that you transport only those items that you will need in your new home. It will also help you optimize your expenses when moving.
A mattress is a bulky object that will take up a lot of space. So before you decide to take it with you, ask yourself: isn’t it time to change it? How old is your current mattress? Does it have any defects, for example, burst springs? Is it sagging? Are there any bumps on it?
You may decide that it’s time to throw away your mattress, rather than worry about moving it.
If you still decide that the mattress is worth moving, make sure that everything you need for packing is at hand. Having the right tools at hand makes it easier to move and guarantees your mattress reliable protection on the way. We recommend:
Mattresses are not so heavy, but it is inconvenient to carry them. Two pairs of hands will significantly simplify the task. Before you start working, be sure to go through the apartment or house and remove the excess from the route. One hit of the mattress can take down an entire shelf of fragile items, so make sure you have room for maneuver all the way.
If you are moving nearby, you may be tempted to skip a few steps. For example, you may decide to only partially disassemble the bed frame. However, this greatly increases the likelihood of damage and breakdowns during the move. Do not be lazy to disassemble absolutely everything. You won’t regret it.
We’ve all seen people transporting a mattress on the roof of a car. Yes, it is possible, but we do not recommend doing this. It is better to use a van or truck and, ideally, find a way to lay your mattress horizontally, especially if it is made of foam rubber. They tend to lose their shape much faster. However, if you are moving nearby, there should be no problems.
Just make sure that there are no pointed objects near the mattress (for example, a disassembled bed frame) and secure it securely. You may want to use mounting straps so that it does not move around the van while driving.
If you have a relatively simple one-day move, it is easier to ensure the safety of the mattress. However, if you are packing for a long-distance move, things may be a little more complicated, especially with foam mattresses.
Foam mattresses, unlike spring-loaded analogues, do not have such a rigid structure to keep their shape. They also shrink under pressure. When the foam mattress comfortably bends under your weight, it’s good. But when the mattress is left in a position for which it is not intended – for example, on its side – it can quickly deform and not return to its previous shape. In our experience, this often happens with multi-layer foam mattresses with layers of different densities.
If your mattress is going to lie for several weeks in a container or a moving van, you need to think carefully about how it will be stored.
If a moving container is used, our professionals prefer to lay memory foam mattresses horizontally and, ideally, on top, so that they do not deform under the weight of other, heavier things.
In the case of a cargo van, laying the mattress horizontally is not an option, given the size of the van. However, if you have an expensive mattress, without which you simply cannot live, you can pack your foam mattress separately. When moving military personnel and their family members, for example, it is standard practice to pack foam mattresses separately.
