To move to a new apartment means to start a new life. However, there is an opinion that it is easier to survive a hurricane than one move. But if you plan everything carefully and prepare in advance, then everything will go quickly, clearly and even bring pleasure. We are going to share some advice on how to prepare for an independent move into a new apartment and not miss anything.
Take a walk with a tape measure through all the large-sized equipment and furniture that you will take with you: you will appreciate the scale of transportation and will be sure that a bulky grand piano or a huge double bed will pass through the doorways of a new apartment.
Make an approximate plan for the arrangement of equipment and furniture in the new apartment. This way you don’t have to drag large objects from one room to another several times and stumble over countless boxes.
After you have estimated the scale of what needs to be transported, you can look for a moving company that will be engaged in transportation. The cost will depend on the time spent on the work, distance and the number of workers that you will need.
It is always better to choose a trusted moving company. Read reviews on the Internet, ask for recommendations from friends and acquaintances.
Inform the mover in advance of all the details: the date, time, distance between the districts, floor, the presence of a freight elevator and the number of boxes— you will immediately know the exact cost of services and will be able to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Sign a contract and carefully read the terms of the company’s work — what responsibility it takes for things, failure of deadlines, damage to household property.
Enter a new apartment, just like in the new year — without debts. Before moving, check whether the utility bills have been paid, write down or take a picture of the meter readings. Also, decide in advance the issue with the Internet and television — whether you will terminate the contract, transfer the provider’s services to a new address or transfer them to future tenants.
Say goodbye to your neighbors and, if possible, leave your contacts in case someone is looking for you at the old address.
Take care of the packaging materials in advance — there should be plenty of them. It is better if something does not come in handy than to look for alternatives in the last minutes or risk the safety of things.
Fragile things will be protected by ordinary and bubble wrap, clothes can be transported in special trunks. Order cardboard boxes and sheets online or arrange with furniture and grocery stores. You will also need rope, tape, signature markers, garbage bags, a knife and scissors.
Packing things should not be postponed until the last days. Eat the elephant piece by piece — start with things that will not be needed “here and now”: small appliances, books, Christmas toys. If you move in the summer, start with packing winter clothes and shoes, in the cold season — on the contrary. So a couple of days before the move, most of the things will be packed.
Sign the boxes from all sides and mark them with stickers — ” Textiles. Bedroom”, ” Clothes. Children’s” — so it will be easier for movers, and it will be easier for you when transferring and sorting things.
Put the parts of the disassembled furniture together with the mounting hardware in separate boxes, put the assembly instructions there as well.
Before moving into a new apartment, put it in order. You will have to clean up after, but it will be more difficult to do everything from scratch among boxes and bags.
Protect the door slopes from damage with cardboard, it is better to cover the floors with a protective film.
You probably enjoy visiting a clean apartment — therefore, leave the maximum order after yourself. You may have to make minor cosmetic repairs — glue the wallpaper or replace the skirting board. You can call a cleaning company and leave the keys to the concierge.
If you have small children or animals, think in advance how they will participate in the move. It will be a lot of stress for them, and for you — unnecessary worries. Perhaps it is better to send children to visit their grandparents for a couple of days, and give the animals to friends for a while or for paid overexposure.
Separately, collect a bag or backpack with things that you will need on the day of moving: the necessary clothes and shoes, documents, phone chargers, first aid kit, toiletries, basic dishes, household chemicals. Prepare food for snacks, water and put it in a thermos bag.
